A Management Philosophy for Success

Mr. Hogg decides to share some of his personal feelings about his success. He has always considered himself to be an entrepreneur. He started or has been involved with at least fifteen different businesses. Most of them had some type of relationship to each other, being connected to some part of the food industry.

“In the last year,” he says, “I started looking back on my life. I analyzed what really made me successful. Although I’m an entrepreneur, there is another common thread in all of my success: I am first and foremost a successful manager.”

I interject before he continues, “I need to make sure we are on the same page about what we are talking about. Let’s review what these things are that you feel have made you successful. Tell me what you are thinking.”

I hope he is going to talk about the spokes of the Captain’s Wheel, since my information on that has always been a bit limited, but instead, he starts talking about that common thread.

He says, “I have been a successful manager. But it is not as simple as all of that. I have been successful at five things: managing myself, managing my businesses, managing my people, developing intrapreneurs, and being an entrepreneur. Since I had to be good at all these things and practice them faithfully, I think we should call them disciplines.”
